Compare Compact Crossovers in Cincinnati: 2022 Ford Escape vs. Honda CR-V, Chevy Equinox, and Jeep Cherokee
The Ford Escape Leads the Pack in Compact Crossovers
Compact crossovers are excellent for Cincinnati drivers seeking extra versatility without imposing space requirements, and the 2022 Ford Escape is one of the best in the class. It offers roomy accommodations, flexible cargo space, and a wealth of available features in a city-friendly physical footprint. Here's a quick look at how it compares to three of its most prominent segment competitors.
Ford Escape vs. Honda CR-V
Powertrains: The Ford Escape offers four powertrain options:
- 1.5-liter EcoBoost turbocharged three-cylinder (181 horsepower; est. 30 mpg combined)
- 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbo-four (250 horsepower; est. 26 mpg combined)
- 2.5-liter Hybrid (200 horsepower; est. 41 mpg combined)
- 2.5-liter PHEV (221 horsepower; est. 102 MPGe and 37-mile electric-only range)
The Honda CR-V offers a 191-horsepower 1.5-liter turbo-four (30 mpg combined) and a 212-horsepower hybrid (38 mpg combined). It's not available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain).
Accommodations: While both models offer ample accommodations, the Ford Escape is slightly roomier than the Honda CR-V. In the front row, Escape offers 2 inches more headroom and 1.1 inches more legroom. Rear-seat measurements are closer, but the Escape still exceeds the CR-V's headroom and legroom by 0.2 and 0.3 inches, respectively.
Safety Features: The Ford Escape comes standard with Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane-Keeping Alert, Lane-Keeping Assist, Blind Sport Information System, and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert. The CR-V comes standard with collision mitigation and lane-keeping assist, but blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert require moving up two trim levels.
Ford Escape vs. Chevrolet Equinox
Performance: The Ford Escape's base 1.5-liter turbo-three (181 horsepower; est. 30 mpg combined) is more potent and efficient than the Chevy Equinox's 1.5-liter turbo-four (170 hp; est. 28 mpg combined). The Escape is also available with a more powerful turbo-four, 2.5-liter hybrid, or a 2.5-liter plug-in hybrid. The Equinox doesn't offer another engine option.
Space: Passengers will appreciate the Escape's roomier cabin, as it offers more headroom and legroom in all seating positions. The Escape also provides 37.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, while the Equinox is limited to 29.9 cubic feet.
Driver Aids: The Escape and Equinox both include collision mitigation and lane-keeping assist technologies on their base trim levels. However, the Escape also comes standard with blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. These features require a higher trim level and an extra package on the Equinox.
Ford Escape vs. Jeep Cherokee
Space: The Ford Escape provides roomier passenger accommodations, with more headroom and legroom in both rows than the Jeep Cherokee. The Escape also offers more utility, with 37.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 65.4 cubic feet with the second row folded. The Cherokee has just 25.8 cubic feet with all seats in place, and a maximum cargo capacity of 54.7 cubic feet.
Hybrid: The Ford Escape offers two efficient electrified powertrain options. The 200-horsepower, 2.5-liter Escape Hybrid achieves EPA-estimated mpg ratings of 44 city, 37 highway, and 41 combined. The 221-hp Escape Plug-in Hybrid gets an impressive EPA-estimated 102 MPGe (gas/electric combined) and an electric-only range of 37 miles. The Jeep Cherokee doesn't offer a hybrid powertrain.
Features: The Ford Escape represents an excellent value proposition compared to the Jeep Cherokee. Springdale drivers can get an Escape SE with 17-inch alloy wheels, proximity keyless entry, an 8-inch touchscreen, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for $1,100 less than the Jeep Cherokee (MSRP).
